[They haven't met in person yet. But she had seemed so excited by Christmas that Clara was charmed. And she couldn't just give her nothing. So she make sure to pack extra sweets she's made into a large box, so Yamato has plenty to sample and enjoy. She also packs in a set of 6 christmas crackers she's decorated like reindeer. Inside are various little toys and trinkets, with jokes printed on paper. Some even have confetti inside.
There's a note attached.
I sincerely hope you enjoy your first Christmas. I can't wait to hear all about the holidays where you're from.
( not that ace wasn't already going to get yamato something, but after receiving the wanted poster of his captain he wanted to repay that in kind. so after a great deal of thinking and thinking and bargaining with the supply drop thingie, he finally got something good.
he thinks, anyway.
so, when yamato wakes up there will be a map of the grand line taped beside their bed on the wall. there are rips and tears on it, doodles and scribbled directions in various different handwritings, stains of various origins, and unfortunately a quarter of it is missing as if it was ripped off in haste. there's a fresh note on the bottom that reads: this is the best i can do. sorry i never got to show you. )
( there aren't many people on the station he is comfortable pushing himself against — most of the acquaintances he has made here are considerably more fragile than he is. yamato, on the other hand, may have him outmatched in that area and he is curious to what extent. )
( after spending time the first two days in sedorum looking for yamato, he's not sure where they are, so, )
hey didn't think someone like you could hide
( he waits another few days and doesn't like that there's no response. but, he sends something else anyway. just in case. )
something's not right about this place more so than the last time i've heard some other people are missing too
( that's it, then a few more days later, )
i wonder if it's like last time people arriving a month after some of us had been there i should've checked in last time too
( about a week later, there are about 5-6 texts of various stories he's heard from the people in sedorum. mostly good stories, albeit sad because these people are trapped in this hellscape nightmare. but, ace things that at least sharing their story and passing along something good is a good thing. plus he thinks yamato might like hearing heroic stories.
and then around whenever they find out the network has been blocked, )
figures you'd get into the good side
( he ain't mad about it, he doesn't know it's actually not so good yet. but if anyone deserves to be in the good place in the afterlife, it's definitely someone like yamato. )
hope things aren't as weird there as they are here
Yamato? Communication between both sides are back on now, did you hear? I hope you're doing okay. I just heard about a group from Taeum who got thrown in the dungeons. I didn't even realize a heaven could have dungeons. Stay safe, okay? Ace is here with me. We're both okay, so don't worry.
( since he's just ninja doordash right now, yamato also gets a parcel of food delivered to their cell when he has the opportunity and means.
he has no idea what they like, but assorted items that don't easily spoil and water will have to do.
but there's also a little package of a candy he hasn't divined a name for — it's a sort of soft, whipped-sugar confection that melts on the tongue and tastes almost like strawberries. )
yamato will treasure it all — but one thing itachi will note, should he try this more than once, is that every single time yamato still has food left over; making what they get stretch as long as possible, in the event it's all they get.
(it's almost as if they're used to this whole being imprisoned and rarely fed business.) ]
( one of the things he has been doing to regain strength in his right arm is practicing his calligraphy in halts and starts.
so yamato, in exchange for what they left for him, gets a haiku, scrawled in elegant brushstrokes that are not quite perfect, the only indication of his injury's severity. it's left on a folded piece of paper pinned outside their door. )
[ in the days when itachi doesn't really want to socialise much, yamato takes to visiting him for ten, fifteen minutes at a time — sitting outside his door, talking: they start with describing the different seasons in wano, the fire festival in the flower capital, then move on to mythology and tales that circulate in the land — about guardian deities, about a loyal fox that stayed by its owner until their death, about a samurai so revered he is considered a deity now;
they leave, always, after the tale of the day is done, but not before leaving behind something: a well-made okonomiyaki, some clearly home-brewed sake, kibi dango.
but after the haiku?
that day, yamato makes their way to itachi's door, and sits down.
speaks. ]
Did I ever tell you how I met my best friend?
[ they don't expect a response, but it's a polite pause they give nonetheless, for itachi to perhaps pause, himself, to listen... if he wants. ]
[ wow uh sorry about the enthusiasm there, reflected in the all-caps ]
yes, i am doing just fine
you weren't hurt in the fighting either, were you? i wasn't able to use violence at all so it was really difficult to fight in the camps but i think i did alright
i knocked some people out with conqueror's haki
and defended others with armament
[ today on: a literal interpretation of "you okay".... mental toll what is that, can you eat it ]
[ yet another flyer ends up on every orber's door, evidently by the same culprit as last time, except now it's a more colorful display:
the back of the flyer features more details about the play and its characters, and soon enough, an announcement from rita herself goes public, giving more context about the event, which all can sign up for. ]
( wherever yamato is, itachi has arrived on their doorstop with a plate of sundry items procured from the bake sale. he had not announced himself, but his — friend, he supposes — had let him in readily enough to their hotel room, and itachi has set the tray on the small table. )
I was informed the 'brownies' are exceptionally delicious.
( don't get him wrong — he has a sweet tooth that very few would suspect of him. but something with that much concentrated chocolate might actually be too much for even him. )
[ yamato, as always, is excited — restless in a way they've not been in a while, too, but in this case it only manifests in them bounding over to itachi when he arrives, now looking excitedly over the tray. ]
They all look delicious! Have you tried any yet? I probably should have gone to the sale too...
jingle bells
there's no sign of who it's from or who it's to — but perhaps the latter is obvious by the resemblance to the colours of their own form?
but also: this is as close as he ever wants to get to the wolf form ever again, thank you, keep your canids to yourself. )
